Epilepsy Surgery for Individuals with Tsc
ثبت نشده
چکیده
Epilepsy is a common manifestation of tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC). More than 80% of individuals with TSC will have seizures, most often beginning in childhood. Several new anticonvulsant medications have become available in recent years, and these drugs along with older medications control the seizures for many individuals. Unfortunately, for some individuals with TSC, the seizure activity proves intractable or refractory, which means that despite appropriate use of appropriate medications, the individual continues to have seizures. In these cases, other therapeutic options should be considered. Currently, these options include: the ketogenic diet, the vagal nerve stimulator (VNS), and epilepsy surgery.

Epilepsy in tuberous sclerosis patients in Sweden – Healthcare utilization, treatment, morbidity, and mortality using national register data
PURPOSE This study is designed to estimate the prevalence of epilepsy associated with TSC in Sweden and to describe treatment, morbidity, and mortality of TSC patients with epilepsy. METHODS Register data for 2004-2014 was obtained from the National Board of Health and Welfare in Sweden. Patients with TSC were identified using ICD-10 codes. Epilepsy was identified using ICD-10 codes, interven...
متن کاملDevelopmental outcome of epilepsy surgery in tuberous sclerosis complex.
In Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC), neurological dysfunction, usually in association with epilepsy, is responsible for the greatest degree of disease-related disability. Epilepsy surgery is increasingly recognized as a therapeutic option given the often medication-resistant nature of the disease. Seven subjects with medically refractory epilepsy associated with TSC, who underwent surgery at a ...
متن کاملAnalysis of the dynamics and origin of epileptic activity in patients with tuberous sclerosis evaluated for surgery of epilepsy.
OBJECTIVE The epilepsies associated with the tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) are very often refractory to medical therapy. Surgery for epilepsy is an effective alternative when the critical link between the localization of seizure onset in the scalp and a particular cortical tuber can be established. In this study we perform analysis of ictal and interictal EEG to improve such link. METHODS ...
متن کاملNovel Histopathological Patterns in Cortical Tubers of Epilepsy Surgery Patients with Tuberous Sclerosis Complex
Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC) is a genetic hamartoma syndrome frequently associated with severe intractable epilepsy. In some TSC patients epilepsy surgery is a promising treatment option provided that the epileptogenic zone can be precisely delineated. TSC brain lesions (cortical tubers) contain dysmorphic neurons, brightly eosinophilic giant cells and white matter alterations in various pr...
متن کاملUnderstanding the health economic burden of patients with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) with epilepsy: a retrospective cohort study in the UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD)
INTRODUCTION Epilepsy is highly prevalent in tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC), a multi-system genetic disorder. The clinical and economic burden of this condition is expected to be substantial due to treatment challenges, debilitating co-morbidities and the relationship between TSC-related manifestations. This study estimated healthcare resource utilisation (HCRU) and costs for patients with TS...
